Hi Gang; The SBMS 2304.3 Beacon/Translator is now back on the air! After three months of being off the air, due to fires and snow, WB6DNX and I made it to Heaps peak on December 17th. I reinstalled the Beacon power supply and turned the Beacon on at 1330 hours. My transverter indicated that all was well and Larry, K6HLH, in Lake Los Angeles, had his rig running and reported that the signal was back to normal and then proceeded to check out the Translator. I was able to copy his 1296.1/2304.7MHz SSB signal OK. Since the Beacon has been turned off for three months, the start up frequency was off, but after an hour of operation it appeared to be very close to 2304.3. I will make more precise frequency checks this weekend and report the results. Please put your 2304 rigs on the air and get me some reports of your results.73, Chuck WA6EXV

Hi All, What a New Years present!! Dec 31, 2003 at 2000 hrs I had a contact with Bill, K0RZ. The contact was CW and was from his home in Louisville (DM79JX) to my QTH north of Wellington (DN71LT). Both rigs used 12in. dishes with Cassegrain feeds. Bills xmtr generates 15mw using DB6NT equipment and my system generates 2mw using a Tripler from 16ghz. Bill used a DB6NT down converter and I used a home built (By Don, N0UGY) down converter. The NF at Bills rig is 8.5 db and my NF is estimated at about 15db. Signals were S8-9 at my end and were quite steady. Bills signals were about the same. The contact was made at 2000 hrs, but the signal continued strong up to 2400hrs. (I gave up in early 2004).

Attatched is a picture of my receiver. 73's Phil W6HCC

BTW - The Vicor web site has a lot of good lit on power supply technology. Go to www.vicr.com, and go to their "Library." In particular, the publication called "First Generation Converters and Accessory Modules" (8th Edition) is a good one to have - a lot of modules in the surplus market are of this variety.

Greetings. Here's some info on a Western Regional Conference of Amateur Radio Astronomers that I thought you might be interested in. The Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers (SARA) is "The ARRL" of amateur radio astronomy. (Many (>50%?) SARA members are hams). Please pass the word on to

technically minded hams who might like to attend. The conference is being held at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory, Feb 28 & 29, 2004. More info at: Http://www.qsl.net/SARAmeetings/owens04.htm

Hello Microwavers, We have added some articles in a new section about 47 GHz equipment to the SBMS Web Pages. They include harmonic mixer designs and tests by Kerry Banke, N6IZW and by a group in

Colorado including Don Nelson, N0UGY, Bill McCaa K0RZ, and Phil Lee, W6HCC.

The URL to find this is: http//www.ham-radio.com/sbms.sd/projindex.htm.

If you don't already know, several SBMS and SDMG folks are mentioned in CQ and CQ-VHF. Gordon West, WB6NOA wrote up a nice story called "Join the Gang on 10,000 MHz" in the Fall 2003 issue of CQ-VHF, on page 6. My article in the Beginner's Corner is called "A Successful Failure" in the December CQ, page 78. A follow-up will appear in the January 2004 issue. 73,Wayne KH6WZ

Dear Friends, A new Beta Release of WSJT is available for free download at the WSJT home page, http://pular.Princeton.edu/~joe/K1JT. Its principal attraction is a new mode called JT65 that includes powerful FEC (forward error correction) and will be able to work with significantly weaker signals than JT44.A brief list of the features and technical specifications of JT65 is available at

http://pular.Princeton.edu/~joe/K1JT/WSJT4.TXT and a "Quick Start Guide for JT65" may be found at

http://pular.Princeton.edu/~joe/K1JT/UPD411.TXT. If you try the new JT65 mode, please send me your comments -- good or bad. -- 73, Joe, K1JT
