At the 5 February 2004 meeting of the SBMS, John Hoot will talk about "Astronomy and microwaves". The SBMS meets at the American Legion Hall 1024 Main Street (south of the 91 freeway) in Corona, CA at 1900 hours local time on the first Thursday of each month. There was discussion on the annual SBMS dinner but on data or location was picked. 27 people in attendance.

Hi Gang; The SBMS 2304.3 Beacon/Translator is now back on the air! After three months of being off the air, due to fires and snow, WB6DNX and I made it to Heaps peak on December 17th. I reinstalled the Beacon power supply and turned the Beacon on at 1330 hours. My transverter indicated that all was well and Larry, K6HLH, in Lake Los Angeles, had his rig running and reported that the signal was back to normal and then proceeded to check out the Translator. I was able to copy his 1296.1/2304.7MHz SSB signal OK. Since the Beacon has been turned off for three months, the start up frequency was off, but after an hour of operation it appeared to be very close to 2304.3. I will make more precise frequency checks this weekend and report the results. Please put your 2304 rigs on the air and get me some reports of your results.73, Chuck WA6EXV
Hi All, What a New Years present!! Dec 31, 2003 at 2000 hrs I had a contact with Bill, K0RZ. The contact was CW and was from his home in Louisville (DM79JX) to my QTH north of Wellington (DN71LT). Both rigs used 12in. dishes with Cassegrain feeds. Bills xmtr generates 15mw using DB6NT equipment and my system generates 2mw using a Tripler from 16ghz. Bill used a DB6NT down converter and I used a home built (By Don, N0UGY) down converter. The NF at Bills rig is 8.5 db and my NF is estimated at about 15db. Signals were S8-9 at my end and were quite steady. Bills signals were about the same. The contact was made at 2000 hrs, but the signal continued strong up to 2400hrs. (I gave up in early 2004).

BTW - The Vicor web site has a lot of good lit on power supply technology. Go to www.vicr.com, and go to their "Library." In particular, the publication called "First Generation Converters and Accessory Modules" (8th Edition) is a good one to have - a lot of modules in the surplus market are of this variety.

If you don't already know, several SBMS and SDMG folks are mentioned in CQ and CQ-VHF. Gordon West, WB6NOA wrote up a nice story called "Join the Gang on 10,000 MHz" in the Fall 2003 issue of CQ-VHF, on page 6.
